About this Blog

So here’s the story;

On December 19th 2009, I decided that I had spent enough time on Microsoft Windows Server 2008 and it was time to move to Linux for both my file server and my media centre (two separate boxes). I’ve dabbled in Linux before; ubuntu, fedora & opensuse were not new concepts to me. Honestly however, they had never been installed for longer than a week without being replaced by their closed-source-counterparts…. in other words I’m a newbie! The truth is, I’ve cheated a little; my file server actually has Ubuntu (Karmic) desktop edition… maybe one day when I’m a little more proficient I can throw away that GUI security blanket!

I’m learning Linux via google, and, I have a feeling that others are doing the same. Every time I make a “major” discovery… (major from a newbie point of view) I’ll post something up about it. If I need to come back and find it one day, it will be here! Of course, I hope that one or two of my posts might help others as well….. but don’t take what I say for gospel!

On a final note; I  have a Dell XPS1530 for my primary workstation (a notebook); and it still has Windows 7 installed on it – that’s right – I’m not even dual-booting Ubuntu…. it’s reliable, it does what it needs to, and to be honest… I really like Windows 7.

Here goes nothing……
